How Manifestation Influencers Repackaged Ancient Binding Spells

On the modern wellness algorithms of desire, the ghost of Gladstone Gander, and the choice to surrender to the wave.

I see a small movement revolving around the raw “DNA” of spirituality. At times silent, at times boisterous, it moves freely, unbound, running parallel with modern “manifestation,” yet standing in sharp, rebellious contrast to it. While mainstream influencers use the language of manifestation to sell expensive digital courses on how to dominate reality, this quieter underground movement is stripping away the modern ego. It is returning spirituality to its ancient, unadulterated roots: a tool not for dominating our lives, but for understanding the universal human nature hidden behind our deepest fears.

For centuries, humanity has used the exact same spiritual language to bind things together whether through the sacred devotion of a holy marriage ceremony or the transactional coercion of a secret curse. Today, manifestation influencers have merely repackaged these ancient binding spells and incantations into viral wellness rituals. This modern wellness framework mirrors ancient practices of coercion while perpetuating toxic positivity, effortlessly shifting systemic hardships into individual spiritual failures. As the line between sacred devotion and the dark desire to control others blurs on our digital screens, a new generation is left trying to figure out where genuine faith ends and manipulation begins.

So, what is the difference?

When a community gathers for a wedding, the source of that binding is entirely open, offered freely in the light of day for everyone to witness, protect, and share. It is an act of trust, a visible blessing on a bond that already lives in the open.

But when the impulse shifts from an open, natural flow into a hidden room, it ceases to be a bridge to the Divine and it changes entirely. A strange, almost comical privatization of God takes over, as if the Source is a secret that only a few can witness. Even when the modern promise is marketed publicly on our screens, the core intent remains the same: it turns into a desperate attempt to hoard the Source for personal gain, or for our own quiet ideas of a “greater good.”

And yet, beneath this caricature of control lies a primal impulse: the desperate need to force a chaotic reality, and the people within it, to bend to our absolute will, all for the simple, heartbreaking desire to experience ourselves the way we imagine we could be.

We find ourselves flooded with algorithmic advice on how to win back our ex-partners, how to transform frogs into princes and princesses, how to manufacture wealth, and how to do and be whatever we desire. We act out these modern scripts while expecting to be uniquely blessed by nature, or handed a modern “potion of eternity” to shield us from the human condition.

This universe reminds me of the world of Gladstone Gander, Donald Duck’s impossibly lucky cousin. Whatever Gladstone desired or needed fell right at his feet or arrived via a timely phone call – effortlessly, simply because he existed. Yet, somewhere, we all know that without an internal shift, certain transformations simply cannot happen. And so, lacking that internal anchor, we wait. We race across the frantic meadows of our own lives, desperate to find the elusive “four-leaf clover” of our spirituality. As far as I can see, what is actually sold to us is a packaged moment of compassion – a unique, human spark turned into a repeatable formula. It forces us to choose whether we are buying genuine faith or simply trading in the ancient craft of the spell.

And why not be tempted by it? A part of us inherently senses that a simple, natural flow exists. We long for an algorithm capable of delivering us from the trials we have endured and watched repeat for millennia. Yet we eventually realize these fantasies never fully live up to what we imagined. Instead, we simply mature enough to accept the walls of reality as they are, and to bless the present moment. It is much like in music, or any great art form, where the artist finally understands the beautiful limits of what can be achieved, finding peace in the creation itself so that the work may be completed and shared. When asked of the finished canvas, “Is this what you wanted?”, one can finally answer “yes.”

I suppose there has been a great, collective dream unfolding for centuries – a dream we all share. For ages, thousands of people have carried the vision of what this world, and what we ourselves, could be. It is a dream that seems to be constantly unfolding, like one generation succeeding another within the grand cycle of this vision. Yet, at the exact same time, everything seems to always return to that old, foundational story: the moment that was entirely unique to a specific individual – that precise, unrepeatable instant which opened up those new horizons.

It is found in a moment where the gaze of two people, full of hope, pauses and locks. That brief suspension of time is held by many quiet truths. It is a sudden, luminous call of the world, heavy with unseen possibilities. It might be the sudden realization of two souls falling in love, or it might simply be a brief, beautiful meeting of strangers in a common place.

Such is the gentle magic of the human mind. Out of all the endless waves that come and stroke our feet, or the heavy currents we swim against just to hold our position, there is always one wave we choose to surrender to. One we allow to take us. Because if there is one thing we can truly do in this unscripted void, it is not to choose our reality, but to choose how we meet it.
