Closer to the Edge

closertotheedgeCLOSER TO THE EDGE is a “Prog Variety Show” playing the finest classic and modern Progressive music from around the world! Progressive Rock (or simply Prog) evolved in the late 60’s/early 70’s from Psychedelic music to elevate rock to new levels of artistry. Prog bands, then and now, push rock’s technical and compositional boundaries by going beyond the standard rock or popular verse-chorus song based structures. Also, the arrangements often incorporate elements drawn from classical, jazz and world music. Long, multi-dimensional pieces are more common while songs with lyrics are sometimes conceptual, abstract, or based in fantasy. Musically, unusual time signatures are frequent as is orchestration and many ‘movements’ within one song. Prog bands sometimes use “concept albums” to tell an epic story or tackle a grand overarching theme. Sub-genres include Prog Folk, Progressive Metal, Jazz/Rock Fusion, Crossover Prog, Symphonic Rock, Psychedelic/Space Rock, International Prog and more. Classic bands include Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Renaissance, ELP, Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, Genesis, Rush, etc and modern bands include Porcupine Tree, IQ, Transatlantic, Anathema, Tool, Dream Theater, Marillion, Opeth, Steven Wilson, etc.

Asheville-FM1Closer to the Edge airs on Asheville FM 103.3 and online. Asheville FM is a volunteer-based, grassroots community radio station created by Friends of Community Radio, a non-profit entity. The idea for Asheville FM was hatched in early 2009.

Prog Palace Radio

Prog Palace RadioProg Palace Radio is a progressive & power metal station that’s been in existence for 14 years. Live shows 6 days a week and a chat room to interact with their DJs. Greg Stafford says “The original station began streaming using Winamp with a shoutcast server plugin and I was off. The station didn’t even have a name yet, but I was streaming and doing my thing playing the music I was into, it just happen to be progressive rock & metal. I soon left his group of stations to do it on my own and I gave it the name The Prog Palace. I began DJing and playing whatever I could find to share with the listeners. A few computer crashes, hard drive failures later I had begun to drop the progressive rock part of the station to focus on prog metal and felt that power metal would be of interest as well. With this change the name also changed, I wanted to include radio in the site name to better explain what kind of site it is.”

Aural Moon

auralAural Moon has been online since 1999 on Usenet!!

One great story about the station was while on live365.com they got Yes’ record label to leak out an advance copy of the album to broadcast, and premiered of the entire Ladder album before anyone had ever heard it! This led Aural Moon to become one of the most popular internet radio stations at the time.

Aural Moon’s programming is selected by software called SAM and they permit the listeners to requests songs from their extensive music database which are then selected by SAM for play.

There is a very strong community and forum on the website.

There are several shows which air on Aural Moon:
